AAAA Seattle Red Sox

In light of the buzz on Jeremy Reed becoming the next potential injection of youth to the Red Sox franchise via Seattle, I think it's only appropriate to recall the swap a few years back of another pair of star-crossed Seattle youth that ended up finding themselves in the Boston mayhem.

Jason Varitek, as i recall, was regarded as a big bat at a key position coming off a nice collegiate career, and Derek Lowe was nearing a turn from a young middle reliever with some sink on his pitches to a versatile starter, who would later become a fine closer, and then a starter once again.

In exchange for those two youngsters, the M's got some guy at the end of his career who played at the end of ballgames and now owns a home right next door to Bret Boone somewhere in Florida.

So if the M's end up swapping an unproven youngster such as Reed for a guy like Clement or Arroyo, both much more experienced, aged, and statistically understood, I wonder whether the M's will finally be considered simply a feeder franchise for the factories back east?

What about...
David Ortiz?

A Minor Technicality
Ortiz to the Twins for Hollins was a bad trade but the Twins let him go before he turned up with the Sox. We had Edgar and Sorrento so Ortiz didn't have anywhere to play.

we wouldn't be talking about...
getting left-handed sock if he was still with the organization though, that's for sure. Of course, if he was still with us, he probably would've torn his achilles or something.

David Who?
David ORTIZ never got a shot with the M's.  Only David I knew about on the M's roster back then was a feller named David Arias.

Oi.  That's right they are the same feller.

:-)

Of course
There was that 26 year old outfielder putting up an .827 OPS for the M's who was swapped for a much more experienced, aged pitcher who had only posted an ERA under 4.00 twice in a decade-long career in '96.  This path goes both ways.

don't let the facts get in the way of a good story...
