Brief Roster Update

Seattle has tendered contracts to all players eligible, except Ryan "Spiroid" Franklin, thus ending his Mariner career. The list of players tendered contracts include Gil Meche, Willie Bloomquist, Julio Mateo and Rafael Soriano.

The M's also designated Jamal Strong and Greg Dobbs (see below) for assignment.

In other news, Jacque Jones agreed to a three year deal with the Cubs for an estimated $16 million over three years.

It's too bad...
Strong deserved a chance here, but as it goes with most of our young talent, he didn't have the chance.  What good is it to have prospects if you aren't going to use them or trade them when their value is high?

Fire Bavasi now.

In Bavasi's defense
Strong isn't exactly young talent and he isn't exactly the healthiest or cleanest prospect in the system.

Plus, his release means that TJ Bohn will likely be the top inside option and he is a much better talent than Strong.

I disagree...
Strong was the prospect that Bohn is (and maybe more) a few years ago.  But we always seem to wait too long to get any value out of our prospects.  Strong could have provided what we needed the most - the ability to get on base at the top of the order.

Exactly...

And the Jones
signing means there probably ready to trade patterson

Mixed feelings
unless they decide to put him in LF.

Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest to see Reed flipped for Arroyo/Clement and Meche flipped for Patterson.

Not sure how I feel about that. I know I'd feel a lot better if Papelbon or Lester were coming back our way instead.

If they're gonna do it
Swing the Meche-Patterson deal first.  Because it would suck to send off Reed for Arroyo/Clement, then have the Cubs go, "LOL we were kidding, we don't need another head case with arm trouble, we'll just put Patterson in LF."  And then we're screwed.

ummm...
And you're not screwed just by having Corey Patterson on the roster?

Is Bloomquist > Patterson?
Because he'll be playing CF everyday otherwise.

Not a bad idea
I wonder what the Red Sox would be willing to give up for a CFer now.

If the Sox were willing to deal Arroyo or Clement before, you have to figure that they will move more than that.  Their desperation level is probably pretty high right now.

I wonder if the M's could throw in a reliever to get them to move Papelbon.  I have heard that the Red Sox like Lester better than Papelbon.  Papelbon is the more advanced of the two, and would be a great pickup for the M's.  In Seattle, he could step in as the #5 guy immediately.  For Boston, he would probably be a long reliever.

Perhaps the M's could throw in a reliever (Putz, Mateo, or perhaps even Soriano).

With the crazy market for starters, guys like Papelbon are like gold.  The Sox should be pretty desperate right now.  Hopefully, Bavasi can turn around a horrible offseason with a good move.

Yep
"With the crazy market for starters, guys like Papelbon are like gold."

Exactly the reason they WONT trade him. He's worth more than Reed, even to BOS.

Grr...
So they sign Washburn and they'll be locked in for that for much too long.

We know Willie Bloomquist can only hit against one guy, and the Mariners signed the one guy, so why keep Bloomquist?

Sports and Bremertonians. Because we can.

It should tell you something...
about a guy's ability if WFB owns you!

Cubs
Yeah... we're pretty much playing one-up with the Mariners as far as bad moves go... at least the Mariners didn't commit three years to Carl Everett.
