Over at the management by baseball blog (which rocks, btw), Jeff Angus has an interesting take on the Everett signing.

Summary: As the Angels GM, Bavasi had success with Tony Phillips, a somewhat similar player in a similar situation

Seems like a reach.
For one thing, Tony Phillips was actually good at the time he was acquired, and for another, I don't think you can pin the development of guys like Jim Edmonds, Garret Anderson, JT Snow, etc. on somebody else's attitude.

Besides, the 1995 California Angels finished four games under their Pythagorean record, where the '94 version matched it exactly. Hmmm.

If Bill Bavasi wanted to bring a motivational, fiery personality to the ballclub, maybe he should've hired a manager who gives a damn.

Jeff
I respect your opinion and will take everything you have said about me not giving a damn into consideration. I love my guys and I love my fans. Please don't hate me. If you will excuse me, I have a Highlights magazine I need to finish reading.

Sincerely,

Mike Hargrove

Be glad he sent you a letter
If Hargrove told you that in person, his stuttering problem would have made that little note a 5 minute speech.

Phillips isn't a somewhat similar player.
Phillips posted an OBP of .406 in 1995. That's really good. Everett, OTOH, had an OBP of .311 last year.

If Bill Bavasi wanted to bring a motivational, fiery personality to the ballclub, maybe he should've hired a manager who gives a damn.

I hear Lou Piniella's available.

Seriously, I don't like a lot of managers a lot better than Piniella, as long as you give him a pitching coach who will keep Lou from burning arms out. He does a number of things I like, like actively using the bench and keeping useful players on it, platooning, and so on.
