Wagner to Mets

NEW YORK -- Fresh off announcing the arrival of first baseman Carlos Delgado, the New York Mets struck again Monday, reaching agreement with free-agent closer Billy Wagner on a four-year contract.

Wagner

Wagner, considered by many the top reliever on the free-agent market, will be paid $10.5 million for each 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. There's an option for 2010, in which the club will either pay him $8 million -- bringing the deal to $50 million -- or buy him out for $1 million. Either way, Wagner is guaranteed $43 million over four years.

Wagner saved 38 games for the Philadelphia Phillies last season, when the four-time All-Star also went 4-3 with a 1.51 ERA. Wagner, who made 75 appearances this year, has 284 career saves.

Before the deal is finalized, Wagner must pass a physical, which is likely to take place Tuesday, before the agreement can be completed.

After spending most of his career with Houston, his two seasons with the Phillies showed the left-hander he could handle pitching in a tough city.

"I think if I had an opportunity to play in New York four or five years ago, I probably wouldn't have been as receptive to it," Wagner said. "After the trade of going to Philadelphia and playing there, I believe that's made it that much easier to handle the media, the pressures."

The Mets reached the agreement on the same day it introduced Delgado, acquired last week in a trade with the Florida Marlins.

The market's going crazy again.

Exactly
...at this rate, the contract AJ Burnett signs will be equivalent to a non-negligible fraction of the national debt.

Hmm
I guess so.  The rumored contract w/Toronto was sort of okay, if you keep reminding yourself that 2005 is pretty messed up.
How about Furcal then?

Kevin Brown Part 2?
Except didn't Brown have a better track record prior to his megadeal?

Goddamnit
I can't decide if this means I have to burn my Phillies Wagner #13 shirt or just retire it.  Ugh.

I guess I'm pissed off that he's going to the Mets, but I'm glad the Phillies weren't insane enough to pay him that much.  Still, he's going to get his ass booed to hell and back any time he pitches in Philly.

I still wear...
my Freddy Garcia M's t-shirt on occasion. I wore it on the day the Sox won the Series since Freddy was pitching. Keep it.

Fun with the crazy market
Stupid Angels.
The Angels remain in the hunt for free-agent slugger Paul Konerko and are believed to have bumped their initial four-year offer to the Chicago White Sox first baseman to five years and about $60 million.

C'mon Anaheim, splurge on Konerko!!!!

break the bank!
cripple the franchise for years! imagine a AL West where Anaheim sits firmly in the basement...

I'm telling you
They can go out and get the big money guys, but they will give up so much in return that the franchise will end up in trouble in due time.  Imagine Vlad-Manny-Konerko in the 3-4-5 slots... and nobody hitting behind them besides Heart And Soul Of The Franchise Darin Erstad, overrated Chone Figgins leading off, and a scrub rotation led by Bargordo Colon.

Sure, we'll curse them and their $100 million payroll, but we'll be laughing in 2-3 years when they can't sign anyone else and have nothing left in the minor league cupboard to fill in the blanks.
