Looks like Pat Gillick is set to become the Phillies next GM.

Does this open the door to a Howard or Thome trade to the Mariners? While I don't have much interest in Thome, Howard is a very interesting player. Given Gillick's experience with the Mariners there may be some minor leaguers he would take for Howard. Vicente Padilla is another interesting player. While I don't have any numbers I have always had the impression he was a ground ball pitcher.

The MO on Gillick

is that he will toss off prospects and draft picks and trade for proven veterans. Don't know how much truth there is to that, but basically, don't expect him to send us players his team could use right now. In fact, don't expect Thome at all.

Howard

I doubt even Gillick is foolish enough to get rid of Howard, but it's a nice thought. Ryan Howard is so fantastic, I would not complain at all if all the Mariners did this offseason for the offense was get Ryan Howard. Stick him at DH, Ibanez in left, and that's a damn good lineup.
